Since the weather has not been cooperating, there is not a lot of pollen or nectar for the bees to eat, so artificial pollen patties have been ordered and heavy syrup is being made. The patties are made from pollen collected from other bees and the heavy syrup (one part water & one part sugar) will be feed to the bees as a replacement for nectar. Bees prefer real pollen, so once there is enough for them to eat, they will stop eating the artificial pollen and syrup.
The day the bees arrive, they will be sprayed with syrup to help them eat while they are still in their shipping package. The bees will also be dusted with powdered sugar, the powdered sugar prompts them to clean themselves thoroughly, which has the positive side effect of pulling any Verroa mites and having the mites fall off before they get in the hive. Powdered sugar is a way to manage the pests without using chemical treatments.
Stay tuned for the arrival of Bumblebee Personal Assistants Honey Bees!
